Gary R. Thompson, P.Geo Director, President & Chief Executive Officer
Gary Thompson has over 20 years of experience in the resource sector. The greater part of his experience comes from mining exploration but also includes 5 years in oil & gas and 8 years in geothermal energy. Prior to joining SGP, he held positions with Newmont Mining Corporation, EnCana Corporation and NovaGold Resources Inc. In 2001, Mr. Thompson founded Cayley Geothermal Corp. which was acquired by SGP in 2006. He has been the lead on the selection and acquisition of the majority of the prospects held by SGP to date. Mr. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology from the University of British Columbia, is Vice Chair of the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association, and is an active member of professional geoscience organizations in British Columbia (APEGBC) and Alberta (APEGGA).
Jack Carthy, P.Eng, MBA Non-Executive Director
Jack Carthy is an electrical engineer, retired from Finning International after 33 years in management and executive positions in Canada, the UK, and Chile. Before joining Finning, Mr. Carthy was the sales manager of British Columbia for Federal Pacific Pioneer Electric. Mr. Carthy is a member of the Independent Power Producers of British Columbia (IPPBC) and has served on IPPBC’s transmission steering committee set up to develop the 2004 Transmission Issues Preliminary Position Paper for the British Columbia Transmission Corporation (BCTC). Mr. Carthy is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and has served on the board of Maxim Power Corporation .
Jerry Evans, P.Eng, MBA Non-Executive Director
Mr. Evans brings more than 25 years of corporate finance and investment management experience to SGP’s Board. In addition to prior successes in developing, marketing and managing private and public equity pooled funds, Mr. Evans has many years of experience in raising capital for infrastructure, renewable and alternative energy opportunities. Mr. Evans is a Managing Partner at Aurion Infrastructure Inc., a company investing in North American mid-market infrastructure opportunities. Aurion infrastructure Inc. is owned by its management and Aurion Capital Management Inc., which in turn is 60 percent owned by DundeeWealth Inc. Mr. Evans is a Professional Engineer, and holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters of Applied Science from the University of Toronto.
Alfred Sorensen, B.COMM, CA Non-Executive Director
Alfred Sorensen is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Galveston LNG based in Calgary, Alberta. Galveston was founded in 2004 and is developing a worldwide LNG midstream business with projects in Canada, Nigeria and the Middle East. Prior to founding Galveston, Mr. Sorensen was the President of Duke Energy (Europe) Ltd and was responsible for the development of Duke Energy’s European strategy. Mr. Sorensen began his energy trading career with Direct Energy in 1987 and went on to be a partner in Continental Energy Marketing Ltd which was ultimately sold to Pan Energy Corp., a predecessor company to Duke Energy. Mr. Sorensen is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Alberta.
Laura Rita Theil, BSS, LLB, MBA Non-Executive Director
Rita Theil is the founder and CEO of JacKryn France Inc. and a non-executive board director of Scottish Water PLC and CQ Search Inc. In 2006, she was the winner of the City of Aurora Chamber of Commerce’s New Business Venture of the Year award. Formerly, she was the director of Schroder Salomon Smith Barney’s UK and European renewable energy practice. Ms. Theil has advised governments, businesses, and investors on privatizations in electricity, water, and gas. In 2001, Commodities Now Magazine named Ms. Theil one of the top 50 key women in Energy for Vision.
Bryan Bertacchi, P.Eng, MBA Non-Executive Director
Mr. Bertacchi has more than 25 years of experience in the power sector, including 10 years in the geothermal industry with Calpine Power Company. Mr. Bertacchi was Area Executive and Vice President for the Calpine Western Region and was Chief Operating Officer of Calpine Power Income Fund, at the time a Calgary-based, Toronto Stock Exchange-listed trust. Mr. Bertacchi has extensive experience in geothermal project development, geothermal plant operations and maintenance, working with elected officials, Original Equipment Manufacturers, engineering firms, Engineering Procurement Construct contractors, lenders and rating agencies and extensive experience within the California Market. Since 2008, Mr. Bertacchi has been the CEO of Danville, California-based Radback Energy Inc., a project development company specializing in conventional and renewable resources. Prior to his role as CEO of Radback Energy Inc., from 2005 to 2007 Mr. Bertacchi was employed directly by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and by Northern California Power Agency.
Michael Atkinson, B.COMM Non-Executive Director
Mr. Atkinson currently acts as a Director of Kobex Minerals Inc., and is President and Director of Canadian Phoenix Resources Corp. and Petra Petroleum Inc. He is a self-employed business consultant assisting junior companies in business development and corporate finance. Mr. Atkinson has over 15 years of demonstrated success in finance, sales, management & corporate development and a proven record of dependability and strong business acumen. Until June 2008, he was the Vice President of Quest Capital Corp. where he oversaw bridge lending activities and helped grow Quest's market capitalization from $30M to over $450M in less than 5 years. Mr. Atkinson’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts, Administrative and Commercial Studies.
Daryl S. Clark, B.Che.E, MBA Non-Executive Director
Mr. Clark currently acts as the Vice President and CFO and Director of South Asia Energy Management Systems, a Director of Ram Power Corp. and as a Director of Canadian Phoenix Resources Corporation. Mr. Clark formerly served as Vice President and CFO of Peachtree Settlement Funding. Mr. Clark has a long history of corporate finance and management within large and small companies. Prior to joining Peachtree, he was CFO for META Security Group. Mr. Clark has also held key leadership positions with DirecTV and Sensormatic Electronics. Mr. Clark has an MBA from the University of Miami and a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Florida.
